Chettinad Traditional Coconut Scraper

The Chettinad antique coconut scraper is a beautifully crafted piece made from a single block of wood, showcasing both functionality and artistic excellence. It features a raised wooden seating platform resembling a long stool, with one end seamlessly carved into a bowl designed to collect coconut scrapings.

The pedestal supporting the platform is also carved from the same piece of wood, highlighting the artisan’s skill. Attached to it is an iron rod shaped like a serpent with a raised hood. The hood forms the actual scraper—a circular, serrated disk—positioned so that grated coconut falls directly into the bowl below.

The scraper is richly decorated with intricate carvings. The pedestal includes two full circular carvings and one half-circle, from which the serpent-like rod appears to emerge, resembling a cobra rising from its coils. Adding to its charm are finely carved parrots—two placed on either side where the platform curves into the bowl, and another pair at the top edge of the bowl.

We acquired this unique artifact from an antique shop in Karaikudi, the main town of the Chettinad region. Estimated to be over 100 years old, the scraper reflects the rich cultural heritage, craftsmanship, and artistic sensibility of Chettinad artisans.
